Abstract

Introduction This study evaluates the increase in plastic waste due to the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as single-use face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical masks provide 85% to 99% protection against virus transmission. In vitro studies indicate that medical masks significantly reduce aerosol emissions.. Method This research employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing quantitative methods to quantify mask waste generation and understand public perception, and qualitative methods for naturalistic object analysis.. Findings: The findings underscore the critical role of local governments in reducing mask waste pollution and enhancing public awareness. Implementation of stringent waste management policies, provision of dedicated disposal facilities, and sustained educational campaigns are essential. Effective socialization, training, and collaboration with private sectors and NGOs can ensure proper management of mask waste, thereby reducing environmental pollution and safeguarding public health.
