Aim and Scope

Mangrove Watch is a leading peer-reviewed and open-access journal, published by Institute for Advanced Social, Science, and Sustainable Future (IASSSF), Jakarta, Indonesia. Mangrove Watch is published twice a year (February and August), and all articles published are available online with open access.

The aimed scope is to advance mangrove science, inform evidence-based policy and decision-making, facilitate collaboration across disciplines and knowledge systems, and ultimately support the long-term preservation of these invaluable ecosystems through dissemination of timely research to global audiences. Submissions from developing nations are particularly encouraged.

The scope of Mangrove Watch extends beyond academic inquiry, aiming to bridge the gap between science and practical conservation efforts. We welcome contributions from diverse disciplines, including ecology, biology, environmental science, social sciences, and policy studies. By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue, we strive to develop holistic approaches to mangrove conservation that integrate scientific knowledge with local expertise and community engagement.

Furthermore, Mangrove Watch serves as a platform for showcasing innovative technologies and methodologies for monitoring, assessing, and safeguarding mangrove ecosystems. From remote sensing and GIS mapping to community-based monitoring initiatives, we spotlight effective tools and strategies for preserving these critical habitats in the face of emerging threats such as habitat loss, pollution, and climate change.

The key aims of Mangrove Watch are to:

  • Advance scientific understanding of mangrove ecosystems globally through the dissemination of high-quality, peer-reviewed research
  • Support evidence-based decision making, policy development, and management practices related to mangrove conservation and sustainable use
  • Facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange between scientists, policymakers, practitioners, local communities, and other stakeholders
  • Increase the visibility and impact of research on mangroves, particularly from developing nations
  • Promote integrated, interdisciplinary approaches to investigating the ecology, biodiversity, values, uses, threats, and conservation of mangroves

The scope of topics covered by Mangrove Watch includes but is not limited to:

  • Mangrove ecosystem ecology and biodiversity
  • Interactions between mangroves and adjacent coastal habitats
  • Mangrove forest hydrology and biogeochemistry
  • Mangrove carbon storage and sequestration
  • Ecosystem services provisioning by mangroves
  • Human uses and socio-ecological dynamics of mangroves
  • Climate change impacts and vulnerabilities
  • Mapping, monitoring, and modeling of mangroves
  • Policy implications and governance issues
  • Integrated conservation planning and management
  • Mangrove restoration science and applications
  • Agroforestry, silvofisheries, and sustainable resource use
