Abstract

Background: Population growth is an urban development problem that can threaten ecosystem stability and social interaction. Ecosystem instability triggers disturbances in the social and economic systems of the people within it. It is necessary to study the dynamics of regional growth in Malang City and its implications for environmental aspects. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach with a combined method through archival research, content analysis, and physical and social observations. Analysis using descriptive analytic and exploratory methods. Findings: The rapid urbanization is due to education, industry, and tourism. This condition to have a positive impact on increasing the economic growth of local communities. However, the negative growth of the city is starting to spread to suburban areas, one of which is Karangploso District, and poses a threat to the continuity of interactions between organisms in the ecosystem and the emergence of social dynamics related to this. Green open space plays an important role. Conclusion: Field conditions in the city of Malang show that the availability of green open space is around 18.7% (below the legal standard). Therefore, integratted and synergized efforts are needed between the community, academia, and the government to create sustainable cities and settlements. Novelty/Originality of this article: Circular migration is a result of educational, business, and tourisms activities' promotion of fast regional growth, which is still the primary driver of the transformation of natural habitats into built environment and the outbreak of ecological disasters.
