Family engagement as a determinant of hypertension prevention in elderly populations
Keywords:
elderly, family , hypertension preventionAbstract
Background: Family roles play a crucial role in preventing hypertension among the elderly. As age increases, the incidence of hypertension also tends to rise, particularly among individuals aged 60 years and above. Therefore, the effective implementation of family responsibilities is essential to prevent degenerative diseases. The purpose was to explore the relationship between family roles and hypertension prevention among the elderly in the working area of Bontomangape Public Health Center. Methods: This study employed a correlational research design with a cross-sectional approach to examine the relationship between family roles and hypertension prevention among the elderly. This study employed a correlational design, which examines the relationship between two variables within a specific context. Findings: Family roles were found to be highly significant in preventing hypertension in the elderly. Optimal family support in terms of dietary intake, medication adherence, physical activity, and emotional well-being contributes to maintaining stable blood pressure levels in older adults. Hence, raising awareness and providing education to families is necessary to encourage active participation in elderly care to prevent hypertension and its complications. Conclusion: Families are encouraged to strengthen the five core family roles in order to improve hypertension prevention behaviors among the elderly. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a holistic analysis of family roles in hypertension prevention, offering contextual insights from a community health center setting, highlighting the direct linkage between active family involvement and elderly adherence to preventive behaviors, and presenting practical implications for designing effective health promotion programs.
